Assistant Winemaker & Cellar Hand | Pikes Wines

Pikes have two exciting opportunities for passionate and enthusiastic individuals to join our Winemaking team as either Assistant Winemaker or Cellar Hand!

These are permanent full time positions, reporting directly to the Chief Winemaker and based at our 100ha Polish Hill River estate. Our vineyard has 18 different varieties, providing an opportunity to learn about different winemaking approaches.

Since 1990, Pikes has also teamed up with the Joyce family in Adelaide Hills to produce the Pike and Joyce label off of the 25ha Lenswood Vineyard. This vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner, Shiraz and Nebbiolo, all fruit being hand harvested and brought to Pikes Clare Valley winery for processing.

Both the Assistant Winemaker and Cellar Hand will establish close working relationships with the Winery and Vineyard teams. Both roles are primarily focused on Cellar duties, with the Assistant Winemaker also taking on a key role in wine blending decisions.

Responsibilities will include:

- Ensure wine quality standards are met

- Maintaining quality assurance - additives, pumps, hoses and other equipment and doing QA testing

- Monitor usage and stock of additives

- Make recommendations to improvements in cellar procedures and the winemaking process

- Assist in organisation of work related tastings

- Undertake/participate in tastings and reviewing the analysis

- Assist in the supervision and training of lower level employees and vintage cellar hands

- Maintaining stock/inventory/waste disposal, calibration and repair of cellar equipment and ensuring high standards of hygiene and housekeeping

- Ensuring compliance with WHS policies and Safe Operating Procedures

- Assist in our continuing journey for Sustainable Winemaking practices.

Working in a small and flexible team, there will be a requirement to work shift work and weekends for the period of Vintage annually (February until late April) is essential.

A formal qualification in Oenology is essential for the Assistant Winemaker position, candidates currently studying will also be considered. A high risk forklift licence and confined space certification will be highly regarded for both roles.

Assistant Accountant | Pikes Wines

Ready to work in a different kind of accountancy? Pikes Wines are looking for an Assistant Accountant to join our small Finance team. Build a long term career in a well established and respected family business! 

You will assist the Finance & Administration Manager in financial reporting, information systems and administration activities across the Pikes group of companies, this full-time permanent role involves:   

- Preparing sales reports and analysis for management and providing assistance in ensuring streamlined sales processing across all of our systems.

- Providing assistance in preparing monthly group financial reports – including profit & loss, balance sheet and cash flow reporting.

- Processing of fixed assets transactions.

- Processing monthly intercompany charges.

- Undertaking monthly expense review and analysis.

- Tax and risk compliance work including preparation of the quarterly BAS and annual FBT return.

- Providing assistance with preparation of annual group budgets.

- Assisting with all areas of IT – systems, purchases of equipment, day to day queries from staff.

Experience and qualifications    

- CPA/CA accredited (or working towards)   

- Experience using XERO accounting software   

- Wine industry experience desirable, but not essential

- Advanced skills and experience using Microsoft Excel is essential

- Good communication skills

Front of House Supervisor | SLATE Restaurant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, experienced Front of House Supervisor to assist in leading our team and exciting our guests with exceptional dining and functions experiences. 

Currently operating 4 lunch services per week, as well as other functions, weddings and dinner services, SLATE Restaurant provides the opportunity for a great work/life balance in a stunning winery location. 

You will play a key role in assisting with all restaurant activities, including service, function and events, stock management, POS systems and the general operational requirements of the restaurant. 

You will assist in the supervision and training of the FOH team, working alongside them to provide superior service and a memorable experience for our diners.

We expect you to lead by example, motivate the team to achieve great results, have a strong passion for food and wine, strong people skills and proven experience in a similar role. 

Skills and experience   

- Demonstrated experience in Hospitality in a similar supervisory role

- A calm and professional personality with a committed and passionate attitude to work

- Experience in larger format offerings would be an advantage [weddings, events and functions]

- A formal qualification in Hospitality highly desirable, not essential

You will possess good communication skills and become a key member of the business, working closely with the Kitchen, Tasting Room & Brewery teams.

- Responsible service of Alcohol certification is essential

Experience in a similar role would be an advantage, however if you have the willingness to learn, experience is not required and training will be provided.

Shifts are predominately weekends for these casual positions and will including some weekday, evenings & events.
