RIESLING DOWNUNDER 2015

rdu2015collageRDU was a fantastic three days of celebration, education and homage to the Riesling grape, starting on February 8. As the leading premium producer of Riesling in Australia, it was a great opportunity for Pikes to connect with consumers, restauranteurs, retailers and other producers.

Sunday’s Riesling Riot attracted 420 consumers through the door, who were treated to a plethora of amazing Riesling, as well as good food and music. The crowd tasted Riesling from all over Australia, NZ, USA, France, Germany and Austria.

Monday consisted of two Master Classes. The first was Revered Residual, a terrific look at sweeter styles and how they are balanced with their RS and acid. Second up was Ancient Arts, which looked at different fermentation techniques.

In the evening, it was over to Melbourne’s wine trade to do some tasting. We saw nearly 300 wine professionals file through the room, giving producers an excellent chance to pour and talk to the gatekeepers of the industry. Plus it was an amazing opportunity for the trade to meet many producers for the first time.

Tuesday was all about education, and three more Master Classes. International Dry Styles, (under 9 grams per litre RS), New and Emerging and Through the Ages, an amazing view to how Riesling ages. The rooms were full and questions flowed.

The panels for the master classes included Tim Atkin MW, Young Shi, who tastes and reviews for Jancis Robinson, Erni Loosen, Willhiem Weil, Cornelius Donnhoff, Mike Bennie, Nick Stock, Stuart Piggot, Hunter Smith, Tom Barry and our own Neil Pike.

RDU was a great success, and as a co-sponsor it enabled Pikes to be at the forefront of Riesling producers on a global scale.
