PIKES 'THE ASSEMBLAGE' S.M.G 2004

The 2004 Assemblage is a blend of 56% Shiraz, 27% Mourvedre, and 17% Grenache. Dark ruby-colored, it has an expressive nose of damp earth, black cherry, and blueberry muffin. Elegant, in the house style of Pikes, this medium to full-bodied wine has layered fruit, ripe flavors, and outstanding concentration. Drink this lengthy wine over the next 6-8 years.

90 Points - The Wine Advocate - October 2007

"(48% shiraz, 35% grenache and 17% mourvedre) Medium red. Complex bouquet offers red berries, fresh and dried flowers, baking spices and musky underbrush. Vivid strawberry and raspberry flavors possess show vivacity and breadth, with silky tannins adding support. Finishes sweet and impressively long. Impressive clarity here.".

90 Points - Josh Raynolds, Tanzer's Wine Cellar, July 2006

"A contrast of cool, foresty fruit and spicy alcohol, this feels breezy and bold.  A grilled steak will tone it's warmth ".

89 Points - Wine & Spirit Magazine - June 2007

"The mix of red and black fruits has a herbal edge. The sweet fruit on the palate is well balanced by the acidity. The mix of fruit flavours is complex, first raspberry, then black cherry with a hint of liquorice, all these under pinned by a herbal green pepper spiciness".

92 Points - Derek Smedley, London Wine Trade Fair, May 2006

"56% shiraz, 27% mourvedre and 17% grenache) Medium red. Spicy berry aromas, with deeper notes of dark chocolate and cracked pepper. Quite sweet in the mouth, with supple, round flavors of boysenberry and cassis. Picks up a fresh, juicy note of raspberry on the finish, with very fine tannins sneaking in. A pretty suave effort".

89 Points - Josh Raynolds, Tanzer's Wine Cellar, July 2006

PIKES SHIRAZ GRENACHE MOURVEDRE 2002

"The nose has a mix of spice, green herbal flavours and black pepper. There is an attractive freshness on the palate with leafy fragrance. Sweet fruit fill the mid palate with the freshness showing again towards the finish. Lots of interest, herbal red fruits with fragrant pepper spice - lots of excitement".

91 Points - Derek Smedley, London Wine Trade Fair, May 2006

“Deep red. Smoky, musky aromas of cherry, bacon and peat; rather mellow and gentle. Then supple, suave and elegant in the mouth, opening up with air to show bright strawberry and raspberry. The tannins are silky and well managed, blending seamlessly into the forceful fruit tones. It's rare to find such a successful combination of the sauvage and the urbane at this price.”
90 Points. Stephen Tanzer. International Wine Cellar.

“This is a spicy blend with lifted nutmeg, dusty, savoury spice and sweet fruit in the blue berry / plum / black jube realm. Firm tannins hold it together, and the finish is long”.
89 Points. Tyson Stelzer – Top 500 2005.

PIKES SHIRAZ GRENACHE MOURVERDRE 2001

Though the smallest part of the blend, grenache's influence seems to grown with air, challenging the blackberry and tobacco smoke contributions from shiraz and mourvedre with its brighter, floral strawberry scent. In combination, the three varieties give a luscious richness, the flavors lasting and fresh, ready for spring lamb.
Joshua Greene - Wine & Spirits Magazine - Jan/Feb 2004

Full red. Wild aromas of berries, plum, prune, herbs and spices, with meaty, horsey and farmyard notes and a reductive quality. Developing leathery palate shows thick, exaggerated dehydrated fruit character framed by firm, astringent tannins. Rustic and savoury, with animal and farmyard notes carrying through to the end. A bit dry on the back, but offers pleasing short term drinking.
