Appearance: Medium to deep red.
Aroma: Attractive aromas of redcurrant, mulberry and crushed violets – quite perfumed really. Some lovely cedary oak too. Needs a little time in the glass to reveal its true self.
Palate: The palate is quite full and rich displaying attractive crème de cassis and mulberry flavours. Fine tannins and well balanced acidity tie it altogether nicely. Finishes long and textural. Delicious.
Summary: Malbec has been blended with Cabernet well before Merlot was even heard of in Clare – the wines made by Stanley Leasingham, Wendouree and Jim Barry are legendary. It is easy to see why the rich mulberry characters of Malbec are well suited to the more austere Cabernet based wines. Keep for 5-8 years. Perfect with roast lamb.
