Golden Era for 2015 “Trad”
The Pikes 2015 “Traditionale” Riesling has now won three gold medals at recent Australian and international wine competitions since its release back in early August. It reinforces what we already thought; the 2015 “Traditionale” is a mighty tasty drop. The 2010 “Trad” also won gold in the aged Riesling class at the recent Clare Wine Show. There are still a few cases left, which as a member you can purchase. Please touch base with Pud Smith on (08) 8843 4370 if you have any questions.
Halliday’s Companion 2016
We have fared really well in the recently-released 2016 edition of James Halliday’s Wine Companion, retaining our 5 Red Star rating once again. Highlights included 97p awarded to our 2014 “The Merle” Riesling, 95p to the 2014 “Traditionale” Riesling and 95p to the 2012 “The E.W.P.” Shiraz. This year twelve of our wines rated 90p or higher. Another solid result for Pikes!
The Wine Advocate
Those of you who follow the Robert Parker ratings will be interested to hear that a couple of our wines were recently highly rated. Our 2014 “The Merle” Riesling was awarded 93p+ while our 2012 “The E.W.P.” Shiraz received 92p+. Both wines are expected to age slowly and gracefully.
Matthew Jukes Best 100
Our export-only 2014 “Hills & Valleys” Riesling was recently included in UK wine journo Matthew Jukes’ Best 100 Australian Wines for 2015. This wine has won several Gold medals now and also received 94p from James Halliday. Not bad for a wine that sells for less than AUD$15 overseas.
“Los Companeros” takes off
The debut of our new red blend “Los Companeros” has been quite a success, if the gap in our warehouse is any indication. The blend of Clare Valley Shiraz and Tempranillo has hit a sweet spot with more than 4,000 dozen of this wine disappearing rapidly since its release in January. It is also literally taking off, with “Los Companeros” listed by Virgin to pour in-flight and also in the airline’s fantastic lounges around the nation.
New Vintage Merle
Our brand new 2015 “The Merle” Riesling is now out and about. As is the norm, each new vintage is officially released on November 3rd as this was matriarch Merle Pike’s birthday. The 2015 vintage is a very worthy follow up to the excellent 2014 model and we expect demand to be strong as always. Veteran wine scribe Ralph Kyte Powell has rated the wine at 96p and noted tough marker Gary Walsh of Winefront rated the wine at 95p+. We have also filled a limited number of 1.5L magnums. These not only look fantastic, but the wine will take a long, long time to reach full maturity as well. We estimate 30-40 years!
