2015 Vintage – Almost perfect

It has been a very good year for the vines in the Clare Valley. Moderate, even weather was evident in the berry development and ripening stages leading to good bunch development. Despite very dry January, February and March months the vines have managed well and lapped up the 40-60mm of rain that fell in late January. When harvest started it all came with a rush as many varieties ripened at the same time, causing some late nights and need for tank space in the cellar.

Early stages, but the quality looks very good especially for Riesling lovers but the reds also look good too.

Clare Expo at The Prince

We recently headed off interstate with a few of our Clare contemporaries to pour a few glasses of 2014 Riesling for our old mates at The Prince Wine Store in South Melbourne. We rubbed shoulders with our friends from Jim Barry, O’Leary Walker, Knappstein, Some Young Punks, Naked Run, Riesling Freak, Grosset and a new brand (but old name) – Vickery. It was a really successful tasting that the crowds flocked to.  Who said Riesling was dead? The Prince is undoubtedly Australia’s best independent wine shop and a great supporter of ours. Cheers to them.

Some Silverware for the “Trad”

The Pikes 2014 “Traditionale” Riesling won a Gold Medal and Trophy for the Champion International Wine in the recent International Aromatic Wine Competition held in Christchurch NZ. A great result that underlines the high quality of the 2014 Riesling vintage in Clare.

Halliday’s Bible

We have fared really well in the new edition of James Halliday’s Wine Companion retaining our 5 red star rating once again. Highlights included 96 points being awarded to our 2013 “The Merle” Riesling, 2010 “The E.W.P.” Shiraz and 2010 “The Hill Block” Cabernet. Fourteen of our wines rated 91 points or higher. A great result for Pikes!

Pikes Flies Malaysia

Having flown many times over the years with Malaysia Airlines the two tragic events of 2014 was particularly sad. A few years back, when Richard Green was the then South Australian GM of MA, half of the S.A winemaking fraternity enjoyed great business class rates every time they flew to the UK to show their wares. The Pikes “Valley’s End” Sauvignon Blanc Semillon has been being poured in business class on board MA flights since early 2014. It’s a great match for the legendary satays that are served on board every flight.

‘Gold Medals & Trophies’

Clare Valley is the home of Australian Riesling so the Pikes team was excited to win the following awards at the 2014 Clare Valley Regional Wine Show. The Merle Riesling has been a strong performer at this wine show for a number of years so its was pleasing for the wine to win 4 awards including Best Riesling of Show and Best Wine of Show.

Pikes Wins Best Riesling at International Riesling Challenge

Pikes Vintners has won the Trophy for Australia’s Best Riesling at last week’s Canberra International Riesling Challenge with the 2013 Pikes “Traditionale” Riesling.

Almost 400 Australian Rieslings were entered in the competition, so it’s really pleasing to be selected as the best Australian wine for the 2013 Challenge.

It’s the 6th time since the competition’s inception in 2000 that a Clare wine has brought home the bacon reinforcing the strength of the variety in the Clare Valley region. South Australia’s other great Riesling region, Eden Valley, has won the trophy 4 times. Well played SA and well played us.

The 2013 Pikes “Traditionale” Riesling is the 29th consecutive release under the distinctive Pikes label.
